At Mooeys, we’re known for being a little bit… particular when it comes to nail health.
If you’ve ever tried to book an infill past the 3-week mark and we’ve gently guided you towards a different appointment, there’s a very good reason for it and it all comes down to protecting your natural nails. We don’t set these guidelines to be difficult, we set them because your nail health will always come before anything else.
What Happens When You Leave Infills Too Long?
While your nails might look fine after three weeks, what’s happening underneath tells a different story. As your natural nails grow, the structure of your gel or builder overlay shifts. This changes the balance of the nail and can lead to a number of issues.
1. Reduced Durability
The longer you leave your infill, the more the strength of the nail is compromised. The product is no longer sitting in the correct position on the nail, which means:
- Nails are more prone to lifting
- Breakages become more likely
- The overall finish doesn’t last as well
What started as a strong, fresh set can quickly become unreliable.
2. Increased Pressure on the Nail Edge
As your nails grow out, the weight of the product moves further away from the natural stress point of the nail.
This creates added pressure at the tip, which can:
- Put strain on your natural nail
- Increase the risk of snapping or trauma
- Cause discomfort if knocked
It’s not just about how your nails look, it’s about how safely they’re sitting on your natural nail.
3. Higher Risk of Onycholysis
This is one of the most important reasons we’re strict on timing. Onycholysis is when the nail begins to lift away from the nail bed and it’s something we always want to avoid.
Leaving infills longer than 3 weeks increases this risk because:
- The structure of the nail becomes unbalanced
- Pressure and movement can cause separation
- It becomes harder for us to monitor early signs
We also take into consideration sensitivities and potential allergies to ingredients such as HEMA (commonly found in builder gels). While reactions are rare, they can develop over time, which is why regular appointments allow us to:
- Check the condition of your nails
- Monitor any changes
- Act early if needed
Why We Recommend 2–2.5 Weeks
For the best results, both aesthetically and for nail health, we recommend booking your infills every 2 to 2.5 weeks.
This allows us to:
- Maintain the correct structure of your nails
- Keep them strong and balanced
- Ensure your set always looks fresh
- Regularly check your nail health
It’s the sweet spot between longevity and care.
Why We Do a Full Removal After Every 3rd Infill
You may also notice that after your third infill, we’ll book you in for a full removal and fresh set. This is another non-negotiable when it comes to healthy nails.
Over time, layers of builder can build up and become harder to properly assess. By removing and starting fresh, we can:
- Check the true condition of your natural nails
- Remove any older product safely
- Rebuild a clean, balanced structure
- Ensure everything is performing exactly as it should
And if we ever feel your nails need a little extra care? We’ll always adjust your treatment and guide you accordingly.
It All Comes Back to Nail Health
We know it can sometimes feel frustrating if you’re trying to stretch your infills a little longer, especially when life gets busy.
But everything we do in salon is rooted in one simple principle: healthy nails first, always.
We’d much rather guide you towards the right timing than risk damage, discomfort or long-term issues.
The Bottom Line
- Infills beyond 3 weeks compromise structure and durability
- They increase pressure on your natural nail
- They raise the risk of onycholysis and other issues
- Regular appointments allow us to monitor your nail health properly
For the best, safest and longest-lasting results, we recommend booking every 2–2.5 weeks.
Because beautiful nails should never come at the expense of healthy ones. Book in HERE to start your healthy nail journey.
