Waxing is now a popular method of hair removal, but many myths surround it. Here are some common misconceptions debunked:

1. Myth: Waxing causes hair to grow back thicker and darker.
Fact: Waxing does not change the colour, thickness, or rate of hair growth.
When hair grows back after waxing, it grows back with a fine point which actually makes the hair feel finer. This is the opposite to shaving which cuts the hair, hence why it grows back with a more prickly blunt tip.
Over time, waxing also reduces the coarseness of the hair as the follicle reduces, creating a finer hair.

2. Myth: Waxing is only for women.
Fact: Waxing is for everyone. It’s a gender-neutral grooming choice.
NB:Currently at Mooeys we offer waxing for all, however can only offer Vulva Intimate Waxing due the training requirements needed for Scrotum waxing. We are working on changing this and want to be fully gender neutral across all of our services, currently it is only the Intimate waxing that isn’t.

3. Myth: Waxing leads to sagging skin.
Fact: There’s no scientific evidence to support that waxing causes skin to sag. Skin elasticity is influenced by factors like genetics, sun exposure, and aging, not waxing.

4. Myth: Waxing is extremely painful.
Fact: While waxing can be uncomfortable, especially the first time, the pain is usually temporary and becomes more tolerable with regular treatments as the pain is caused by the removal of the hair follicle. This reduces with frequency as it is given less time to develop, resulting in a much less painful experience. Also, we use Hot wax only, combined with awesome products and incredible techniques that minimise discomfort

5. Myth: You can’t wax during your period.
Fact: You can still wax during your period. We do ask that you pop a fresh tampon in prior to your treatment. Your skin may be more sensitive due to hormonal changes but it doesn’t stop you from having a wax.

6. Myth: Waxing causes ingrown hairs.
Fact: Ingrown hairs can occur with any hair removal method, not just waxing. Proper exfoliation and moisturising can help prevent ingrown hairs. Additionally, professional waxing techniques reduce the risk of ingrown hairs compared to other methods.
NB: If you do struggle with ingrown hairs – then Laser hair removal treatment is an incredible solution to this to remove the hair completely. We currently offer this in our Petersfield, Godalming and Horsham salons.

7. Myth: Waxing leads to permanent hair removal.
Fact: Waxing removes hair from the root, but it’s not a permanent solution. Over time, hair may grow back thinner and sparser, but it will not stop growing completely.

8. Myth: You can’t wax if you have sensitive skin.
Fact: People with sensitive skin can still wax, though they should take extra precautions, such as using gentle products and ensuring proper aftercare to prevent irritation. We will only ever use Hot wax (also known as peelable or non strip wax) on the face and bikini areas in Mooeys because it is far gentler, but our strip wax is also super kind to sensitive skin aswell.

9. Myth: Waxing can damage your skin.
Fact: When done correctly by a professional, waxing is safe for the skin. It may cause temporary redness or irritation, but it shouldn’t cause lasting damage. Proper aftercare is crucial to avoid any issues.

10. Myth: Waxing can only be done on long hair.
Fact: Hair needs to be about 1/2 cm long for waxing, which is typically about two weeks of growth. It doesn’t need to be excessively long for effective waxing, however we do need to catch the correct hair growth cycle which is between 4 and 6 weeks. So your first wax won’t last as long as a usual wax, but with regular treatments, you will get incredible results that can last up to 4 weeks.

Understanding the truth behind these myths can help you make informed decisions about whether waxing is right for you and ensure a better experience if you choose this hair removal method.
